You’ve finally moved into your new home and visitors are coming to see your house. You’ve finished unpacking, but haven’t had a chance to grace your home with your own characteristic style. You want to give your home a warm and welcoming glow. But you don’t have time for major exterior decor and landscaping plans right now – that’s a work in progress, of course.
It’s time to get creative with the easiest and quickest trends in house exterior DIY projects to make your home inviting and well lit, even when you haven’t had any time to work on it.
Try some of these cool DIY projects recommended by Buzzfeed to create your own house exterior lighting using inexpensive, reused or recycled materials.
1. Re-purpose your mason jars
Did you have plans for making preserves but never got around to it? Do you have a collection of finished jam jars? Don’t let them just sit in a cupboard taking up space. Pop in some tea lights and place the mason jars around your porch leading up the steps to the door. You can add some panache with colourful beads or sand holding the candle in place. Or try warming up the effect by painting the jars with translucent glass paint. Your new home will welcome visitors with its homey glow.
2. Recycle your tin cans
Punch holes in a pattern through empty tin cans with a hammer and nail. Punch a couple of holes at the top of the can on either side. A drill with a fine bit will do the job as well. Paint the can in pretty colours and add your tea lights. Decorate your front porch and landing with your new light fixtures. If you want hanging lights, thread some picture wire through the holes at the top to hang from your railing or porch ceiling hooks.
3. Create ice lanterns
Keep the kids busy with winter games in your front yard. For a cool DIY project in winter, dress up your front yard with ice balloon lanterns. Fill up some balloons with water and put them in the freezer. Don’t let them freeze all the way – about 3 or 4 hours should do it. Snip the balloon tops and peel them off. Pour out the excess water and put your tea lights inside. Put the ice lanterns around the yard and light your candles. For coloured lanterns, just add a bit of food colouring to the water.
4. Seashell lights
You know that collection of seashells you picked up while on vacation? Put them to use by adding a nautical look to your home’s exterior decor. Your front porch will say 'beach vacation’ in no time when you use seashells as a base for your tea lights.
5. Install an illuminated address sign
Make sure visitors to your new house will be able to find it for the house warming party! The most permanent and professional option – install a custom illuminated address sign. You’d be surprised how quick and easy this simple outdoor project is. In less than an hour, you’ll have a brightly-shining house address calling out to visitors like a beacon!
You house exterior will be all lit up with your DIY projects, so why not add the finishing touch with an illuminated address sign? There are plenty of colours and styles to choose from and you can install it easily in no time.
